It's a wonderful story about overcoming fears and doing what's necessary for country, for family, and for love.
Her children are adorable, and Miss Beasley, the town librarian and friend to the Parker family, is perfect in her role as a curmudgeonly friend. And Ellie's life has been just as hard, illegitimate in a strict religious family. Will is just a sweetheart with a backstory that could make you weep. It's a joy to read a story where the setting is so well done. I'm not quite old enough to validate them myself, but I heard plenty of stories from my parents about listening to radios and working on a farm. Spencer does a terrific job of getting all the details right. This is a wonderful story of a country coming off the Depression into the throes of war. The two immediately recognize that the other is exactly what they need, but it takes a few months before they fall in love and marry. Eleanor Dinsmore is a pregnant widow with two toddlers and a farm full of junk. Will Parker is an ex-con looking for a job and home in Georgia when he sees an advertisement from a woman looking for a husband. ******* Morning Glory (8/16/33) Lowell Sherman ~ Katharine Hepburn, Douglas Fairbanks Jr.Morning Glory is a historical romance that takes place in Georgia just as WWII breaks out. Ellie Dinsmore is a widow, pregnant, with two small boys, living on a ramshackle farm. As the man attracted to Hepburn's true nature, Mr. Morning Glory takes place in Whitney, Georgia just before the United States entry into World War II. Hepburn was also perfectly mannered in her winning role, and received great support from an excellent cast. Moreover, RKO quickly followed-up "Morning Glory" with a hit version of "Little Women".
Note, the eligibility period was confused and extended, which inadvertently excluded Greta Garbo's "Queen Christina" from the running. Hepburn won her first "Academy Award" as "Best Actress" for this role however, this "Oscar" was another in the film organization's puzzling choices. This unoriginal, but appealing story would have worked better without lurching around so often. Hepburn's career staggers one step forward and two steps back, with her memorable moments highlighted by a tipsy impromptu performance of the "Romeo and Juliet" balcony scene at a snooty party.
