Female characters were either maternal and/or solely existed to fall in love with heroes. The early 60's was a very different world with some antiquated concepts of gender, race, parenting, law, cultural tolerance, domesticity, politics, etc. Some older comics can be a challenge for me to relate because the world we live in now is so different. In my extremely biased opinion, Spider-man is better is every respect, but Fantastic Four was never bad. Well, I just read the first "Mighty" volume of Spider-Man a week prior. "THE FANTASTIC FOUR!! HAH! LITTLE DO THEY DREAM THEY ARE NAUGHT BUT PAWNS IN THE HANDS OF DOCTOR DOOM!" I'll hang around for a few more trades, if for nothing else than to get to famous landmarks like The Coming of Galactus and whatnot, but this short collection left me thoroughly unimpressed compared to Marvel's other Silver Age efforts.

Plus the fact that their origin story made absolutely no sense at all (what were they wanting to be the first at? Going to space? Traveling through the cosmic space radiation? What were they even studying and why did they need to steal a space shuttel? It's all incredibly vague) whilst they just loiter about waiting for crime to happen didn't exactly paint an interesting image of them as characters.

Kirby's art here is fine - nothing spectacular that he's really known for but nothing bad either, but the constant referral to Marvel comics (as well as the FF's own comic series and Stan and Jack helping them out in an issue) just felt a tad too silly to me while situations like Johnny facing off against a "tribe of Africans" and the team nuking Submariner's ocean beast after he had just found out his entire civilisation had been nuked felt incredibly tone deaf. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at keeping my expectations in check for media from a certain time period, but this collection of the first 10 Fantastic Four issues just didn't do it for me - while there are the occasional solid story ideas and the villains more often than not steal the show, the main characters of the FF just aren't that interesting to follow and frequently serve to frustrate and annoy the reader than endear them.
